An Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS) cabinet is widely used to maintain power supply when the main source fails. For projects in Southeast Asia and Africa, ATS switchgear is commonly installed between utility power and standby generators, or between two independent utility feeders. Choosing the correct configuration is important for both power reliability and equipment safety.

1. Confirm the Power Supply System

Before selecting an ATS cabinet, confirm the incoming voltage, frequency and phase system. Common low-voltage systems in Southeast Asia and Africa include 380V, 400V and 415V AC at 50Hz. Some projects may use 440V or 60Hz systems.

Also determine whether the system is 3-phase 4-wire or 3-phase 5-wire and whether neutral switching is required.

2. Select the Correct Current Rating

The ATS rated current should be based on the maximum operating load rather than simply the generator rating. Typical ATS ratings include 100A, 160A, 250A, 400A, 630A, 800A, 1250A, 1600A and higher.

For large industrial or infrastructure projects, an ACB-based ATS is generally more suitable, while MCCB-based configurations are commonly used for smaller distribution systems. Allow sufficient capacity for future load expansion.

3. Choose the Right Transfer Class

ATS equipment can generally be configured as PC Class or CB Class according to the application and protection requirements.

A PC Class ATS is designed specifically for source transfer, while a CB Class solution combines transfer and circuit-breaker functions. The selection should consider short-circuit level, protection requirements, switching frequency and local standards.

4. Consider the Application Environment

For factories, hospitals, telecom stations, mining sites, commercial buildings and water pumping stations, the operating environment can significantly affect cabinet selection.

In tropical regions, high humidity and condensation should be considered. For outdoor or harsh environments, a higher IP-rated enclosure, anti-condensation heater, ventilation or other environmental protection can be specified.

5. Define the Control Functions

A suitable ATS cabinet should provide automatic monitoring of the two power sources, including voltage and phase conditions. Common functions include automatic transfer, automatic re-transfer, manual operation and electrical/mechanical interlocking.

For generator applications, a generator start/stop signal can also be integrated. Projects requiring centralized management can add RS485/Modbus or other communication interfaces.

6. Check Standards and Customization

For international projects, customers should confirm applicable standards before ordering. Common references include IEC 61439 and IEC 60947-6-1.

The cabinet can be customized according to the single-line diagram, load list, cable entry direction, cabinet dimensions, busbar capacity, protection devices and preferred electrical component brands.

7. What Should Buyers Provide for a Quotation?

To obtain an accurate ATS cabinet quotation, provide:

  • Rated voltage and frequency
  • Maximum load or rated current
  • Utility + generator or dual-utility configuration
  • ATS type and preferred brand
  • Number of incoming and outgoing feeders
  • Required protection devices
  • Indoor or outdoor installation
  • Required IP rating
  • Communication or remote-control requirements
