Control, isolation and autotransformers look alike from the outside, but their winding structures and jobs are totally different. Know the difference and buy right the first time.

1. Control Transformer Structure: primary winding with adjustable input taps, plus two or more independent secondary windings on each phase. Result: one unit supplies several control voltages from a single source. Best for: control circuits of machine tools, PLC systems, signal lamps and relays. Choose it when: multiple stable outputs are needed, or the input voltage varies and must be switched by taps.

2. Isolation Transformer Structure: primary and secondary are fully separated with no electrical connection; power flows by magnetic coupling only. Result: galvanic isolation that protects operators and sensitive equipment and blocks interference. Best for: medical devices, precision instruments, CNC machines and systems needing a clean isolated supply or a separate neutral (Dyn11). Choose it when: electrical isolation or an independent grounding system is a hard requirement.

3. Autotransformer Structure: one continuous winding per phase, with the secondary tapped from the middle of the same winding; primary and secondary are electrically connected. Result: less copper and core material - lighter, cheaper and more efficient. Best for: simple voltage conversion, such as adapting 380 V supply to 220 V in a workshop. Choose it when: you need only a voltage change and no isolation. Never use it as a safety isolation device.
